A stair railing has to satisfy three things at once: the guard line load, the graspable handrail requirement, and the architecture. The mechanical profile we recommend depends on the stringer type, the tread construction, and whether you want a visible cap rail.

OBC Part 9 — Low-Rise Residential
Residential guards are engineered to the OBC Part 9 horizontal line load of 0.75 kN/m and the 0.5 kN concentrated load applied at the top of the guard. Glass thickness, post spacing, anchor pull-out, and substrate detailing are calculated for every project — not pulled from a generic catalogue.
OBC Part 3 — Commercial & High-Rise
Part 3 balustrades are calculated to the 1.5 kN/m line load and 0.7 kN concentrated load required for assembly and exit-handling areas — typically using 15.2 mm SGP-laminated structural glass in an engineered base shoe.

Section 05 — Technical FAQ
Yes — but only when a continuous graspable handrail is added. OBC Sentence 9.8.7 requires a handrail with a graspable cross-section (typically 30–43 mm diameter) on at least one side of the stair. Our standard frameless stair detail uses a slim 38 mm stainless or wood cap rail mounted to the top edge of the laminated glass, which satisfies both the guard line-load requirement and the graspable handrail requirement in a single element.
Tempered safety glass is hardness-rated well above ordinary float glass and won't scratch from normal hand contact, jewelry, or pet claws. We arris (polish) every visible edge, and the laminated SGP panels we use for top-rail-free stairs are rated for 30+ years of interior service with no UV yellowing of the interlayer. Cleaning is the same as a frameless shower enclosure: a microfiber cloth and a streak-free glass cleaner.
