Section 02 — System Anatomy

Slim aluminum or stainless posts through-bolted to the rim joist or to engineered blocking between joists, with tempered glass infill panels. The most common and most durable profile for wood and composite decks across the GTA — fastener pull-out values are calculated and documented per post.
316 stainless spigots bolted through the deck surface into structural blocking. Used on flat rooftop terraces, concrete deck slabs, and IPE decks where a continuous fascia anchor is not practical.
Standoff hardware bolted to the deck fascia (rim joist face), capturing glass through pre-drilled holes. Lowest visual footprint and the preferred profile for cantilevered deck fronts and small balconies where the deck framing must remain exposed.

OBC Part 9 — Low-Rise Residential
Residential guards are engineered to the OBC Part 9 horizontal line load of 0.75 kN/m and the 0.5 kN concentrated load applied at the top of the guard. Glass thickness, post spacing, anchor pull-out, and substrate detailing are calculated for every project — not pulled from a generic catalogue.
OBC Part 3 — Commercial & High-Rise
Part 3 balustrades are calculated to the 1.5 kN/m line load and 0.7 kN concentrated load required for assembly and exit-handling areas — typically using 15.2 mm SGP-laminated structural glass in an engineered base shoe.

We calculate the pull-out resistance of each fastener into the substrate (rim joist, blocking, or concrete) and document it on the stamped shop drawing — which is what municipal inspectors look for at the framing and final inspections.
Heat-soak tested 12 mm tempered glass is rated for 30+ years of exterior service. The real durability risk on a deck is at the glass edge and at the hardware interface, which is why every panel is gasket-isolated from metal, every post base is detailed with weep paths so water can't freeze against the glass, and every fastener we use is marine-grade 316 stainless that won't streak the deck with rust.
