Section 02 — System Anatomy
Balustrades operate under higher line loads than residential guards and demand tighter coordination with the building structure. We specify three core profiles depending on slab condition, architectural finish, and load classification.
Extruded aluminum base shoe (top-mount or fascia-mount) embedded into concrete podiums and mezzanine slabs. Accepts laminated structural glass with no intermediate posts — preferred for commercial assembly areas requiring an uninterrupted 1.5 kN/m line-load capacity.
Cast 316 stainless point-fixings rated and stamped for commercial line loads. Used on exterior podiums, hotel terraces, and outdoor amenity decks where channel embedment is not possible and posts are not desired.
Slab-edge standoff hardware that pins laminated glass to the face of the structure. Common on luxury residential cantilever balconies and feature stair balustrades where the structural fascia is part of the architectural expression.

OBC Part 9 — Low-Rise Residential
Residential guards are engineered to the OBC Part 9 horizontal line load of 0.75 kN/m and the 0.5 kN concentrated load applied at the top of the guard. Glass thickness, post spacing, anchor pull-out, and substrate detailing are calculated for every project — not pulled from a generic catalogue.
OBC Part 3 — Commercial & High-Rise
Part 3 balustrades are calculated to the 1.5 kN/m line load and 0.7 kN concentrated load required for assembly and exit-handling areas — typically using 15.2 mm SGP-laminated structural glass in an engineered base shoe.
Wind & Snow Loading
Every exterior system is sized against the Toronto, North York, and GTA design wind speeds in the OBC reference data, plus snow drift loading where applicable. Stamped drawings, anchor calcs, and product cut-sheets are bundled into a permit-ready submission package for your municipality.

For Part 3 assembly and exit-handling areas we design every balustrade to the full 1.5 kN/m horizontal line load and 0.7 kN concentrated load specified in OBC 4.1.5.14. Our standard specification uses 15.2 mm SGP laminated glass in a structurally embedded base shoe, with stamped drawings that include the post and channel anchor calcs reviewed by an Ontario-licensed P.Eng.
SGP-laminated panels retain their structural integrity even after the outer tempered ply breaks, which is the OBC requirement for a top-rail-free guard. The interlayer is stable from -40°C to +80°C, will not yellow under UV exposure, and is rated for 30+ years of exterior service when paired with our gasketed base-shoe detail that drains water away from the glass edge.
Commercial balustrades in the Greater Toronto Area generally fall between $420 and $780 per linear foot fully installed, depending on the profile, glass spec, finish, and the access conditions on site.
